Hunter Education Mentoring Program (formerly "QDM for KIDS") - a QDMA Hunting Heritage Program
a comprehensive, interactive wildlife management class to new hunters in the Raleigh-Durham Area.
Cape Fear River’s program, entitled "Hunter Education Mentoring Program" is structured to reach out to
any new hunter who may otherwise not have an opportunity to learn hunting technique from an experienced
mentor. The program is organized entirely through volunteer service of area  biologists,
horticulturists, certified hunting education instructors, NRA certified marksmanship instructors,
QDM-practitioners and more.

The goal of this program is to provide new hunters with a well-rounded program that will promote both
protect our woodlands and wildlife as public stewards. Participants will develop their skills in
firearms training (center-fire and rim-fire), and White-tailed Deer Biology Kids will
participate in Herd Surveys, Wildlife Habitat improvement projects and QDM hunts
.

Most participants coming from non-hunting families.  CFRB provides all firearms as a result. Participants
provide only for consumables and insurance.  Cape Fear River QDMA is seeking sponsor support to fund the various activities planned (both individual and
corporate).  Monies received will qualify as tax deductible; and will ensure all that children  may participate regardless of financial circumstance.

We are also seeking sponsors who would lend facilities and/or access to woodlands to conduct hands-on programs and hunts.
If interested in becoming actively involved or providing financial or in-kind support, please contact Brian Padgett or Guy Gardner at 919-552-9449 or e-mail:

CRFB Establishes the Nation's first QDMA Club

North Carolina State University now has another claim to fame... it is the site of the nation's first QDMA Club!
Organized and run entirely by students at NCSU, this club offers another avenue through which the CFRB
may extend its reach to area youth, engaging their interest in the hunting sports, offering leadership opportunity
and promoting the sound and ethical white-tailed deer management principles endorsed by the QDMA
This group organized in January 2011 and has already exceeded expectations!  In March 2011 the Club delivered
a major project to more than 1400 area youth - the  "Wild Child Scavenger Hunt" at the 2011 Cape Fear Wildlife
Expo in Wilmington NC.  Led to various stations that offered insight into NC's natural resources, kids learned
about a variety of wildlife issues, learned what they can do as kids to protect our wild animal species, and what
they might want to consider doing now if they are interested in pursuing a wildlfie career!  The Club has also
developed a t-shirt which they are selling to fund Club activities, which will include development of a scholarship
program at NCSU.  Field Days, marksmanship opportunities,a nd field studies are all in the cards for this
energetic group!   Make this site a favorite to keep up with their activities:

NORTH CAROLINA CAMOUFLAGE COALITION
The Cape Fear River Branch of QDMA is actively working to preserve our hunting heritage by supporting a North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF) initiative
called the “North Carolina Camouflage Coalition” (
www.nccamo.org). The mission of the NC Camouflage Coalition is simply to form an overlying bridge across
all sporting groups so that individual sports men and women can know about, and respond effectively to, any threat to hunting and fishing sports that might
arise.  Funds for conservation are likely targets to be diverted for funding of other needs when budgets grow lean – needs which may be completely unrelated
to conservation.  Habitats can be usurped for economic and development interests without regard for wise wildlife management.  The ranks of hunters and
fishermen in North Carolina number in the millions, yet no overlying organization exists that can bring all sportsmen and women together.  Recognizing that
hunters and fishermen were the first conservationists and remain the best, it is perfectly logical that QDMA members would voluntarily rise to the challenge of
mobilizing fellow sportsmen and women of all ages and interests.

Membership in the NC Camouflage Coalition is free. NC Camouflage Coalition members - concerned sports men and women -  will be asked to monitor e-mail
alerts about threats and respond through the NC Camouflage Coalition website to appropriate decision-makers using sophisticated software that matches
members to their elected and government officials using zip codes.  Members will receive an action alert that contains a summary of the threat or opportunity
along with a link to their elected official to voice their concern with a simple click of the mouse.  Members will not be asked to write letters or e-mails, or to call
government officials about issues.

Cape Fear Wildlife Expo - 3rd Weekend in March - Don't miss it!
An Annual CFRB Event since 2009

The mission of the Cape Fear Wildlife Expo is to encourage youth to enjoy the great outdoors through hunting, fishing and other outdoor sports; to heighten
public awareness of our natural resources; and to encourage conservation of these natural resources.  Four QDMA branches including the Cape Fear River
Branch are proud to support this inaugural event, offering a 20 x 40' interactive activity promoting an appreciation for the diverse wildlife enjoyed by outdoor
enthusiasts in our State.  In 2010 a "Wild Child Scavenger Hunt" was added to our list; and in 2011 QDMA also sponsored the Natural Resource Seminar
Series at this event, featuring more than two dozen interactive workshops, including Hunter 101, an interactive workshop for new hunters designed to get a new
hunter out into the field with confidence.

The Wonders of the Whitetail! Seminar Series
March 6, 7 and 8, 2009

QDMA branches from across the state, in collaboration with several wildlife partners, offered 23 contact hours of wildlife management instruction offering topics
as diverse as they were interesting.  Fundamental QDM education and sportsman technique seminars began every half-hour throughout the Classic, beginning
at 6pm on Friday evening.  Homeowners were taught how to manage deer in urban settings and how to develop a wildlife-friendly habitat; Clubs learned about
deer disease, managing that wily coyote, how to age deer on the hoof; and how to establish food plots for a variety of wildlife.  Turkey enthusiasts enjoyed the
work of local call-makers; Sportsmen enjoyed hunting skills workshops including culling strategies, advanced tree stand tactics, hog hunting with bow around
the world, and tactics on calling turkey. Kids of all ages enjoyed NC Snakes and Raptor shows.

A successful QDM program requires an increased knowledge of deer biology and active participation in herd management. Attendees at this year’s Dixie Deer
Classic got just that!

The Future of White-tailed Deer Management
March 6, 2009

Teachers,  Wildlife Professionals, Foresters, and Sportsmen alike enjoyed a professional track, offering Environmental Education and CF-1 CFE credits at the
Dixie Deer Classic on Friday March 6th.  This workshop  featured a world-class panel discussion by some of the nation’s leading white-tail experts offering the
latest updates on REACH-funded white-tailed deer research, case studies supporting QDM at both Chesapeake Farms MD and Ft. Bragg, Fayetteville, NC;
holistic management of North Carolina's native habitat; and a legislative update by Gordon Myers, Executive Director of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources
Commission.

Wildlife Conservation through Education Events
at the Dixie Deer Classic - an Annual CFRB Event since 2009

Wildlife scavenger hunts, turkey calling contests, a bow shoot, retrievers, snakes, and raptors are just the beginning of a fun filled day at the Dixie Deer Classic’
s “Youth Day” at North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The Cape Fear River Branch of QDMA is pleased to support the Wake County
Wildlife Club by collaborating with QDMA branches across the State and than 20 wildlife conservation partners  to host area youth at a half-day workshop
following Standard Course of Study Biology Objectives.  Youth groups attending received academic credit for attending, awarded at the discretion of their
school.  216 Kids participating in the Oh Deer! Workshop in 2009 enjoyed an award winning video discussion supporting responsible management of the white-
tailed deer; a hands-on soil lab sponsored by 4-H, and a careers discussion sponsored by NCSU and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Enforcement
Division. More than 1200 kids attended "Take A Walk on the Wild Side" in 2010 offering more than a  dozen interactive projects, led by the NC State Chapter of
QDMA; and approximately 300 youth attended the "Wildlife Conservation through Education Workshops in 2011.  Mark your calendar and plan to attend next
year first week in March - WCTE Workshops followed by Youth Day at the Dixie Deer Classic.

Cape Fear QDMA and Howell Woods Host Handicapped Hunt
Dec 12-13, 2008

“This is what it’s all about” offered Rick Russell, Cape Fear River Branch Program Chair when asked
what one gets out of being involved in a QDMA Branch.  Rick was referring to the camaraderie of the hunt
being hosted by the Cape Fear River Branch of QDMA for the North Carolina Handicapped Sportsman, Inc.
“It’s not really the learning, the banquet, or any of those material things that matter most to me; it’s the
sharing of yourself that means so much.”

The Cape Fear River Branch (CFRB) hosted a weekend hunt for two hunters with limited mobility at the
2,800 acre Howell Woods Environmental Education Center in Four Oaks, North Carolina on the 12th ands 13th
of December for trophy deer and feral pigs.  Howell Woods is located in the coastal plain of Eastern NC and has
been under QDM for the past five years under the management of biologist, James Sasser.

Hunters for the weekend were John Book with companion Tim Luck and Keith Blevins with companion Jackie Blevins.  Howell Woods’ staff members Mike Rose
and Katrina McDougald were tremendous help throughout the weekend event, supporting CFRB volunteers Rick Russell, Bill Foster, and Guy Gardner, who
together made sure that these hunters had a great time.  Howell Woods provided the hunt and a cabin located on property.  The Cape Fear River Branch of
QDMA brought in a Huntmaster high lift to provide tree-stand level hunting access for their guests, provided transport, provided and cooked all meals, and kept
the conversation lively.   All agreed that it was a great event; one that we’ll definitely be doing again next year.

QDM for Kids Youth Hunt
Oct 31-Nov 1, 2008

Cape Fear River Branch QDM for Kids enjoyed a 2-day end of the year youth hunt  in Hyde Country hosted by Don Lassiter
on his 300 acre Green Wing Hunt Club.  To qualify kids completed an official hunter safety course and have participated in a
year-long mentorship program offered free of charge conducted by the Cape Fear River.  Several deer were taken with two
young hunters taking their very first deer.  A highlight of the hunt was the bear sightings – a mother and her cubs; and an
adult which came within ten feet of the stand!

QDMA for Kids is a complete woodsmanship program which teaches kids the fundamentals of responsible wildlife
stewardship incorporating each cornerstone of the QDMA - herd monitoring, habitat management, hunter management, and
herd management.  Safety, hunter ethics, hunting skills, and love of the outdoors are central tenants of this program.
Parent/Guardian participation is encouraged, particularly if they, too, are new to the sport.
Applications for enrollment for next year’s program, which begins in February of 2009, are now being
accepted.  Send an e-mail to greaterthan8@yahoo.com to confirm your interest or for additional information.

festivity and fun!

QDMA Celebrates 20th Anniversary
September 20th 2008

From its humble beginnings QDMA Founder Joe Hamilton was convinced that deer hunters could become effective
deer managers. That conviction has never faltered.   Nearly 20 years later more than 50,000 deer hunters in all 50
states and in Canada have implemented this vision.  Joe recounted QDMA's humble beginnings at QDMA's 20th
Anniversary Celebration held at its National Headquarters in Bogart, GA on Saturday September 20th, attended by
                                             QDMA members nationwide.
Guy and Judy Gardner were pleased to represent the Cape Fear River Branch and
North Carolina State Chapter at this event.

For the first few years all assets of the organization fit into the trunk of Joe's Chevy El Camino.  Together with Mr and Mrs. Robert Manning, Joe kept this dream
alive through QDMA's early days.  Brian Murphy joined a few years later, offering to build this organization without a salary and only $147 in the bank.  Today
QDMA is pleased to open its 20-acre National Headquarters to all members for Deer Steward Classes; Conferences; and other REACH initiatives.
 Quality
Whitetails
, QDMA's professional journal is widely recognized as the leading source for cutting edge deer management information; and Quality White-tails
TV
airs on Thursday and Sundays on the Outdoor Channel.

QDMA's REACH program best defines what QDMA is all about.  Supported by more than 3,000 wildlife professionals, QDMA provides unparalleled access to
unbiased, research-based information to its members.  Consulting with the world's leading experts in management of the white-tailed deer, QDMA is uniquely
positioned to support wildlife advocacy; to host QDMA certification programs for wildlife professionals, and offer practical tools to members that promote hunter
heritage through its mentored youth programs.   More than 180 branches nationwide ensure that REACH initiatives find their way to the grass roots level.

Congratulations QDMA Staff!  Thank you for your sacrifice, dedication and for the commitment you hold to ensuring a high-quality and sustainable future for
white-tailed deer and white-tailed deer hunting.

QDM for Kids offered a NRA Safety Certification Course
September 14th 2008

NRA Certified Instructor Paul Kosinski provided an NRA Safety Certification class to QDM for Kids
and other interested QDMA members on Saturday September 14th.  Review of gun safety was
followed by a target shoot. QDM for Kid
Johnathan Miller  and QDMA Member  Judy Gardner
completed all requirements, shooting neck-and-neck, and received basic certification.
Thanks Ski for promoting responsible use of firearms and hunter safety!

North Carolina Hunter Safety Courses
August 2nd-3rd and August 23rd-24th 2008

NC Hunter Education Instructors affiliated with the Cape Fear River Branch may take a bow.  Over the
course of August they will have contributed to preserving our hunting heritage, having introduced nearly
60 new hunters - many being youth new to hunting - to the sport; the youngest only 10 years old!  Nearly a
third of all students registered were girls.  In support of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission
hunter safety program, Cape Fear volunteers regularly conduct certification classes. Using an interactive
format that they developed themselves to hold a child's interest, they have actively recruited youth
participation; and have had nearly 100% success in training the many children who have participated in
these classes.  August 2008 classes were organized with the support of Bass Lake Park in Holly Springs
                                         and led by
Brian Padgett and Guy Gardner of QDMA and Sabrina Thompson, Park Manager at Bass
Lake Park.  Watch for our calendar for additional classes which will be scheduled at this venue.  Many
                                         thanks to Sabrina and
Bass Lake staff for their support of this most important initiative.

QDMA supports NCSU White-tailed Deer Management Workshop
Spruce Pine, NC August 13th-14th

Paul Kosinski, Richard Vitek, Brian Padgett, Ed Richardson, and Guy Gardner of the
Cape Fear River Branch spent the weekend together with more than 60 like-minded deer
enthusiasts honing their deer management skills at this two-day workshop sponsored by
NC State University Forestry and Environmental Outreach Programs featuring wildlife professionals
Craig  Harper (Univ Tenn), Chris Moorman (NCSU), Brad Howard (NCWRC), Gabe Karns (NSCU),
Jim Phillips and Bennie Riddle (Western QDM Group), and Joe Hamilton (QDMA).
Focus groups,
speaker panels, discussion supporting implementation of QDM Programs, Habitat Management, and
field tours provided a well rounded event.

Brian Murphy speaks at Bass Pro Shops Fall Hunting Classic
Charlotte NC  August 9th-10th
The Cape Fear River Branch was pleased to host an education booth at this year's Bass Pro Fall Hunting Classic in Charlotte,NC, and to support a speaking
engagement at that store by world-renown biologist and Executive Director of the Quality Deer Management Association,
Brian Murphy. Though Brian  readily
admits to being a "deer geek" (he proclaimed his intent to becoming a deer biologist by calling a meeting with his parents at the age of 12), Brian entertained
his audience with ease.    As a researcher at the University of Georgia, Brian held the privilege of recording known deer grow from year to year. He shared with
his audience the actual sheds dropped by some of these animals, demonstrating that a spike is not always a spike if nutrition is adequate; and that the decision
to mark a buck as a "management buck" for culling is a wrong decision  more than 80% of the time.  Brian's advise - manage your age class and sex ratios; not
your antlers.

Cape Fear River Branch is named BOTH 2008 Education Branch of the Year and 2008 National Branch of the Year!
Chattanooga,Tennessee  July 24-27th

Cape Fear River Branch Members Guy and Judy Gardner, Paul Kosinski, and Ed and Debbie
                                                   Richardson
were on hand to accept the top honors recognized by all QDMA Chapters- National
Education Branch of the Year and Branch of the Year - at this year's QDMA National Convention.
Competing with 183 Branches nationwide and in Canada, Cape Fear was recognized for its creative and
enthusiastic support to wildlife conservation projects, and for its outreach and support to North Carolina
wildlife agencies, wildlife conservation groups, disadvantaged youth,  and North Carolina industry.  Cape
                                                  Fear's Education Chair,
Brian Padgett, together with his colleague Rick Vitek were responsible for
conducting a series of urban white-tailed deer workshops across North Carolina promoting unbiased
education to the general public supporting responsible white-tailed deer management.  Brian is also a key
opportunity to learn from experienced sportsmen and women.
Rick Russell and Robbie Church are
credited with developing an initial concept statement uniting industry, wildlife professionals, wildlife
conservation organizations, sportsmen, and the general public to create an outdoor classroom promoting responsible wildlife
management.
Marion and Chuck Steffen were responsible for reaching out to area Boy Scouts, enabling the Branch to reach out more than 600 boys this
year.   Each of these projects required countless hours of support by many, many enthusiastic volunteers; each who may take pride in knowing that they have
made a difference!

"QDM for Kids" Shooting Skills Weekend
June 14th  2008

QDM Kids spent a glorious mid-summer day practicing their firearms skills at the home of
Guy and Judy Gardner.  After first reviewing safe firearm handling technique, kids were
invited to try their hand using both rim fire and center firearms aimed at 3-D targets in
true-to-life settings. Even though many had never shot a gun before, the kids did an amazing
job-each grouping well within the zone. This weekend was one of several planned over the
coming months promoting kids confidence in the use of firearms. Kids participating in
all sessions will earn NRA certification.

Kids were also treated to a tour of
Twin Creek Hunt Club managed by Rick Russell.
Rick discussed tree stand placement, allowed kids to climb a tower box blind, and gave them
a tour of a pine forest that has been improved to enhance the quality of the wildlife habitat.  The day was made complete with a wild game BBQ and swimming;
and by the 3" of rain that fell after the close of the event!  Many thanks to Brian Padgett and his many volunteers for a great day!

"QDM for Kids" Hunting Skills Weekend
May 31st 2008

QDM Kids feel one step closer to the hunt after a weekend filled with hands-on hunting skill
                                              activities hosted at the
Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center in Four Oaks, N.C.
Kids especially enjoyed the tree stand exercises, where they first learned the techniques of
safe tree stand use then had an opportunity to demonstrate what they learned.  An artificial
blood trail served as a scavenger hunt, putting into practice their knowledge of habitat, deer
movement, and sign.  They also installed a food plot, spreading seed, fertilizer and lime,
                                              with seed generously donated by
Cyprus Knee Chufa.  Kids learned the importance and
technique used to safely handle of firearms, using inert firearms provided by the North
Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and will practice use of rim-fire and center-fire
firearms at future sessions.  Finally, kids honed their hunter ethics skills walking though
scenarios used to point out best practice and good sportsmanship.

In the long term, if left unchecked, white-tailed deer can damage the very habitat that deer
and other wildlife depend on!  Together with District 3 North Carolina Wildlife Resources
Commission Biologist
Joe Folta, Bass Lake Naturalist/Master Gardener Sabrina Thompson,
Cape Fear River Branch volunteer  Rich Vitek  conducted a well-received 2.5-hour seminar
that explores this issue.  CFEs were provided to foresters;and Level III Environmental
Education credits provided to educators.

In an unbiased way, this interactive workshop shares the history of white-tailed deer
management, explores the threats that come with overpopulation of these deer herds,
and shares lessons learned by other communities who have tried to address control of
white-tail deer populations first-hand within their neighborhoods.  The goal of this program
is to simply promote better wildlife stewardship, by making educated choices about deer
management and maintenance of quality wildlife habitat.

The workshop will use materials from the
Living with  Whitetails program, also available on DVD for use in the classroom.  This program is recommended by the
National Science Teacher's Association;  is a winner of an international award from The Wildlife Society - the
"Conservation Education Award";  and given the
national Outdoor Writers Association of America's
"Golden Eco Award," which is given to the top conservation-education production.
